Don Mathias wrote at http://nzcriminallaw.blogspot.com/2010/11/relevance-probative-value-and-bayesian.html: "Ronald Allen thinks it is difficult to determine relevancy until all the evidence has been heard (p 13) – but I think that is because he confuses relevancy with probative value." There is a grain of truth in the contention that neither the relevance nor the probative value of any single item of evidence can be assessed in isolation from other evidence: There may be lateral links with -- dependencies on -- other evidence that may reduce or even destroy the probative value of any single item of evidence. Furthermore, it may be hard to keep all important lateral links in mind. But it does not follow that separate pieces of evidence do not -- at least potentially -- make distinct contributions to the probative value of the evidence on the final hypothesis in issue.
