There a sense in which economists (and oil producers) can move with a swagger in comparison with their counterparts in law. A
recent newspaper article reports that the fracking methods that are transforming natural gas production methods in the United States may eventually also boost oil production in the United States -- by more than 20% and thus reduce the cost of foreign oil imports by $175,000,000,000/year. (The production of natural gas through fracking promises to generate revenues many times greater than that.)
But perhaps the pursuit of justice -- which some naive law professors think is their quintessential task -- is priceless. In any event, lawyers and law teachers are bound to capitalize on the fracking bonanza. (Keep in mind that lawyers belong to the second or third oldest profession. There is no escaping them.)
